Eagles, Worries, and the mix for 4-21-17

In no particular order:

Went to the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN, and the Owl Center in Houston, MN, last week. The bluffs area of southeastern Minnesota is worth visiting. It offers vistas no otherwise available in the state. The Root River valley is beautiful.

Not from this trip, but still and eagle picture I took.

Also visited the SPAM Museum in Austin, MN. It’s as much a gift shop as a museum.

I’m 21 cans of SPAM tall, I guess.

Spring has arrived. I’m glad to get back outside again on a regular basis.

Speaking of getting outside, I am taking part in the MS Ride again this year. If you enjoy the weekly mixes a good way to show it is to donate to my fundraising efforts. Some of you loyal readers/listeners have already and I do vastly appreciate it!

Sometimes I worry that people who I know online may die or otherwise vanish and I would never know and that makes me sad.

Prince died one year ago today.

Drag, Sign, and the mix for 3-31-17

Shall we board the Wonkatania for another trip down through the dark tunnel where not a speck of light is showing?

I had written a paragraph here about the process of sorting old photos that I am currently engaged in and how much of a drag I find it but that was a drag to read as well so I deleted it. Instead, a word of advice: Work out an active and sustainable way to manage your digital pictures or archiving just becomes the new forgetting.

I built a playlist yesterday that so well captured my current existential state that it made me too sad to listen to it. Never had that happen before.

Training for the MS Ride in May has started in earnest. Getting back into condition hasn’t been as bad as I expected but my knees are certainly showing their age this year. Last night, as I was training, I caught sight of myself reflected in the dark window. A side view of me in lyrca is not flattering and now I feel bad for anyone who has to ride next to me.

Prince’s album “Sign O’ The Times” is now 30 years old. I could write a whole post on my relationship to that album (let me know if you want to read that) but instead, here are, in no particular order, my current ten favorite Prince songs:
-It
-Hot Thing
-Pink Cashmere
-Anotherloverholenyohead
-1000 X’s & O’s
-Electric Chair
-Cloreen Bacon Skin
-Kiss
-Right Back Here In My Arms
-The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Tribute, Stevie, and the mix for 10-14-16

Last night was the Prince tribute concert in St Paul. Through some luck or strange magic my wife* managed to get tickets to this affair. I’m not going to write a full review of the show for several reasons. First? TL:DR. Second, I’m still sorting out my thoughts on it. While I would love it if memorials shut the door on the past, they just don’t work that way. Instead, in a no particular order short list, are the moments that resonated with me the most.

Knowing who did what and when will help add context to my remarks so I encourage you to check out the full set list here. It’s a good factual account of the night and I generally agree with the review.

-Mint Condition’s set was tight and smooth. No gaps, high energy. It was how Prince did his shows. Morris Day and the Time knew exactly what the crowd wanted and delivered. This combo was a great start to the show.

-Nicole Scherzinger (of the Pussycat Dolls) with her version of “Nasty Girl”, brought that fun and sexy energy that infuses the music, it felt like a real tribute. Same with Jessie J’s version of “I Wanna Be Your Lover”.

-Doug E. Fresh freestyling in “Housequake” and “Gett Off” was mind bending. He finds space in the rhythm that no one else seems to know is there. He’s a hell of a hype man, too.

-Donna Grantis is the real deal. Her guitar work was on fire.

-For my money the song that really went deep was “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker”, not because the song is obscure, but because the arrangement that was covered last night was the keyboard driven version that Prince played in an appearance on Jay Leno.

-I’ve lived a charmed life. Seeing Chaka Kahn and Stevie Wonder on stage together to play “1999” brought that home again. Seeing Stevie Wonder jam on “Superstition” was without compare.

Flickering Out and Paisely Thrills, plus the mix for 3-27-15

Continuing with last week’s theme of photo management, I think my time of actively being interested in flickr is drawing to a close. I bring it up because this has been a very slow week at work so I’ve been looking for amusements. Flickr doesn’t offer any real interest anymore. What I joined in 2006 isn’t there anymore. The community is scattered, the layout is junky, and the interface has fallen behind or been outright neglected.

You've been saying that for two years now flickr...

You’ve been saying that for two years now flickr…

The final sign along this road came last night when I read via twitter this exhibition notice from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Having had my photographs on display at the MIA before this announcement was of great interest to me. If you read to the bottom you’ll note the way to participate mentions only Twitter and Instagram. All previous opportunities came from flickr.

Further, sorting and altering (resize and crop mainly) pictures for public presentation has lost its verve. I’m sure I’ll post things now and again, but very casually. Like all of my hobbies, I come and go from things and I think I am on the red shift from photography but I’m sure my orbit will come back around.

An oddly unbroken thread in my mind this week has been “small thrills”. This started last week in my search for stock photos for the blog post (via Getty Images) when I came across the image below.

You don’t have to know me very well to know there are many thrills for me in that image and it’s been there in the pages of my mind like a bookmark all week. I’ve found as I get older there are fewer of those thrilling little moments in life, many of which used to crop up around the early spring rebirth of the world, and that of the things that go missing in a life, I’m feeling the loss of these tiny pleasures more acutely than I would have thought.

Just today I listened to this fascinating BBC Radio program (programme) about the vault of unreleased music Prince has at Paisley Park. I’ve seen that vault and it captures my imagination. If you’ve got an interest in The Purple One and 53 minutes, give it a go. The idea that Prince isn’t sentimental about his past explains a lot. As fans sure, we want to hear what is in there, but these are in all ways his and I completely respect that.
