Poetry, Lows, and the mix for 4-7-17

My suspicion is that if you read this blog you already know its National Poetry Month. Below is a poem that I wrote some time ago (perhaps as long as three years). I’ve shopped it around but it hasn’t found a home so I’m going to share it here because I want to put it out into the world.

Directions to the House

Half the distance already gone
Unnoticed like autumn to the pines

Soften a moment by the plum trees
Our border-guarded neutrality

Turn towards the lake or the stream
So long as a choice is made

If the post box lays barren and forlorn
No blame lies with the postman

No more turning widdershins
The gravel lane runs true

There, half lit, the house open,
Fitful as one who naps too late

Digress into the warm night kitchen
To break our fast of each other.

In other news, I have had a new pattern show up in my blood sugars that I really don’t like. For the last few days I’ve had a low reading at about 8:30 am. Traditionally this has been the time for a shallow high (not a sharp peak but a slow build and decline). 8:30 am is a terrible time for a low blood sugar because the mind leaves you and starting your work day not being able to concentrate and accurately handle details is a very bad trip. I’ll have to figure out why this is happening and get it fixed.

Next Friday the office is closed for Easter. As such, no podcast.

Poem: Since I Grew a Forest of Ear Hair

Since I Grew a Forest of Ear Hair

Since I grew a forest of ear hair
I’ve forgiven my eyebrows
For their helter-skelter care
Of hotly disputed borders we
Called a truce and try to play fair.

Since I herniated that disk in my back
The involuntary oof and occasional urgh
Surely add to the sadness of this sack
At least the rattling sabers of my knees
Are kept by the treadmill from attack.

Since I woke up stiff and sore in middle age
Where shoe laces are an indignity away
I’ve sussed which campaigns to wage
And which fools to suffer with grace
To Advil, to Advil! This swelling assuage.

Poems, Crowds, and the mix for 4-2-15

The office has been preternaturally quiet this week. It’s Spring Break. That has been fine by me. I’ve had some time for creative pursuits while I wait for the email that never comes.

First and foremost in terms of creativity is the April Poem-A-Day Challenge (PAD from here out) hosted by Robert Lee Brewer. April is National Poetry Month and in celebration of the cruellest month Mr. Brewer posts a prompt a day to help people get writing. I’ve partook of the fun for the last few years and really do enjoy it.

Me, in a typical April Poetry Mood.

This dovetails with another thing in my brain regarding creativity and community: Crowd funding. The two projects (both now fully funded) that interest me are Sara Benincasa’s short film on body image (I kicked in for that one) and De La Soul’s new album making approach. While I am in favor of crowd funding as an idea the rewards system often worries me. Most of the things I’ve funded that have come to fruition have been fine, but when the rewards system breaks, it really breaks.

Shut Up Legs, House of Illness, and Remix Yellow 2

Spring is here. In a real way. The wonderful perfumes of the world have returned to the air. Being outside is delectable.

This week has been dominated by illness in the Fortress of Funk. Kiddo has had a massive head cold and Mary had a round of what we think was food poisoning. I stayed home on Wednesday due to having a pretty rough go on the overnight with low blood sugar mixed with Mary getting up to vomit. We are in a general sense lacking in rest.

I’m still up to date on the Poem-A-Day Challenge. They aren’t masterworks certainly but I am happy with more than one of the poems I’ve written so far.

Though my legs haven’t been so pleased with the idea I’ve been doing indoor training rides to get ready for the MS Day Ride on May 10th. I think I’ll be fine but I might drink from the well of suffering on the road at this training pace, especially if the weather is cold and foul as it has a high propensity to be this time of year. I’ve got the Minnesota Ironman on April 27th (my tenth effort I think) so I’ve got double the compulsion to keep at it. Thanks to some very generous folks I’ve passed my fundraising goal but you can still donate if you like! Here is my fundraising page for the MS Ride event. Warning: There are pictures of me in full lycra through that link.

National Poetry Month, A Tepid Review, and Remix Yellow 1

It’s National Poetry Month! I’ll save my wandering unfocused thoughts about my relationship to both reading and writing poetry for another time. What I will share is that I’m trying to write a poem each day this month and am following the prompts (more or less) by Robert Lee Brewer on his Poetic Asides blog. Another blog that is worthy of note for April’s PAD (Poem-A-Day) goings on is this one by Rachel Bunting. She is an amazing poet and I’m enjoying what she’s doing so far this month. As for my poems, if you really want to read them, let me know.

Some time back I said I would review the latest eponymous Crystal Method album when I was comfortable with the work. Well, I am so here goes: It’s fine. It was a kickstarter project and I feel good that I backed the effort. In terms of sound there is more noise than I like and it feels less like the innovation of their past works and more like chasing a current sound. A change to their recipe is a lot of featured artists across the album. Those tracks are without exception less appealing. In their oeuvre it ranks above Tweekend but below everything else. The cream of the crop track wise are “110 to the 101”, “Jupiter Shift” and “Sling the Decks”.

I’m chuffed to say that through the wonderful generosity of the folks I know I’ve reached, in one paltry week, my fundraising goal for the upcoming MS Ride! Thank you so much!! If you haven’t donated yet but were thinking of chipping in, you can still do so. Here is my fundraising page for the event. Warning: There are pictures of me in full lycra through that link.
