Rant, directions, and the mix for 5-5-17

I’m going to start with a rant so skip to the next paragraph if that isn’t your style. First off I’m in a foul mood because of the vote yesterday in Congress to move ahead with 45s disastrous “health care” bill. You see those pictures from after the vote? All old white people celebrating. The greed, hatefulness, and vast hypocrisy of it is staggering. I would shout more about it but I have a strong suspicion that if you are reading this you are in the choir already. Second, there is a process my place of work does once every few months and yet my coworkers can’t figure the fucking thing out. They literally have a 9” x 13” piece of paper covered in wonderfully precise instructions and act surprised EVERY TIME when I point out they are doing it wrong. Plus side: This is the very last time this process happens on paper. Next time there will be a whole new set of questions but at least 1500 less papers to shuffle.

I like media studies so here is a thing that occurred to me just a few days ago. The marketing juggernaut that is Disney/Star Wars has new fodder these days. As such there are a lot more images and merch from the franchise around. One interesting side effect of merchandising the Star Wars movies is that on balance there are more images of evil than of good. My guess is that since the bad guys all wear masks, it is easier to license a mask than someone’s actual image (you know, a real human being’s face). I find it at least a little dark amusement that the push to make the most cash by a giant company normalizes images of evil as commonplace. Thought experiment: How much more often do you see Darth Vader or a storm trooper instead of Luke, Leia, Finn, Poe, Han, or Rey?

In a scant eight days I am taking part in the MS Ride again. If you enjoy the weekly mixes a good way to show it is to donate to my fundraising efforts. Some of you loyal readers/listeners have already and I do vastly appreciate it! My fund raising page is here. I am very pleased to say I have raised $878 so far.

Eagles, Worries, and the mix for 4-21-17

In no particular order:

Went to the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN, and the Owl Center in Houston, MN, last week. The bluffs area of southeastern Minnesota is worth visiting. It offers vistas no otherwise available in the state. The Root River valley is beautiful.

Not from this trip, but still and eagle picture I took.

Also visited the SPAM Museum in Austin, MN. It’s as much a gift shop as a museum.

I’m 21 cans of SPAM tall, I guess.

Spring has arrived. I’m glad to get back outside again on a regular basis.

Speaking of getting outside, I am taking part in the MS Ride again this year. If you enjoy the weekly mixes a good way to show it is to donate to my fundraising efforts. Some of you loyal readers/listeners have already and I do vastly appreciate it!

Sometimes I worry that people who I know online may die or otherwise vanish and I would never know and that makes me sad.

Prince died one year ago today.

Short Time, The Letter L, and the mix for 5-1-15

Short post this week. Mixed this last night, enjoyed it, then forgot to write a blog and now I’m against the clock to get this out the door.

The Minnesota Ironman Bike Ride went well. 14 mph average across 30 miles. 34F at the start (7:30 am) and about 44F at the end, 2 hours and 8 minutes ride time later. Glad I have shoe covers now. They made all the difference in staying warm. The ride was well organized, well supported, and full of very good (as in prepared and courteous) riders. I did have a minor back spasm during the ride, but otherwise no issues.

A special thanks to Jim Moomey for being the person to put me over the top for my MS Ride fundraising goal! If you want to still get on the bandwagon (I know you do!!) you can do so here. To those of you who have already donated, thank you! I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me.

The theme of this mix was an accident, but happenstance proved fecund. So fertile was this serendipity that there is a Part 2 in the works.

It’s A Zoo Out There, Castle Danger, and the mix for 4-10-15

The idea for this week’s mix is perfectly sound. As usual I had the idea, built a giant stack of songs that fit, carved those songs down into a reasonable length, and then arranged the songs into a flow. Somewhere in that process things went pear-shaped. What’s worse is that I knew it but kept going anyway. This collection is like driving a lap race in a homemade race car. It seemed like a good idea and starts alright, the middle you flinch and try to avoid the shrapnel, and the end is alright again because you didn’t die when all the body panels came unbolted.

Below is a picture of me during the song collection phase of this mix.

Spent the long Easter weekend up in Castle Danger, Minnesota, on a little family vacation. We went to Gooseberry Falls State Park as well as Split Rock Lighthouse. Because of the chilly weather along Lake Superior there were few people around, which is exactly how I like it.

In up coming events, I’ve signed on to do the MS Ride again this year with my friend Kate. This will be my 7th go ‘round. I’m just over half way to my fundraising goal of $400. If you are included to donate and help me out you can do so here. I would certainly appreciate it. To those of you who have already donated, thank you!

Play list, 5-16-14

Today is the final day of the spring term where I work. It’s a time not only of closure, but of starting on new things. Next week is Finals Week and that is a unique challenge in my office. I liken it to falling down stairs: you know what is happening and that it will end at a definite point but all you can do it tuck, roll, and hope not to get too hurt. Why this matters to the blog is that traditionally, when I was still attached to the external studio I would suspend the mixes during the summer. This is continues to be my plan. Don’t fret, there will be music in the summer but sporadically.

In more upbeat news: My niece is going home from the hospital today! After a two week stay for viral pneumonia, she and my sister are headed home. Lisa (my sister) said that this was the second worst illness Sophie (my niece) has weathered. We are all glad this storm has passed.

My guess that is if you are reading this you know I love me some Tron. You may also know I like wearing hockey jerseys. Imagine if those two things were smashed together! Got your brain around that? Good, because they were and I got mine in the mail this week!

Sure I got five for fighting, but I was fighting for the users!

The MS Ride Day was on the 10th of this month and quite a success. Not only did I hit my personal fundraising goal (with the help of you good folks!) but the team made its goal as well. Thank you for that! We had clear skies, low wind, and 60F temps. We all got a little too much sun but after this cold spring and brutal winter, I heard no complaints.
