Earflaps, Bread, and the mix for 10-12-18

Very short on time to write and post this. You have been warned.

Best thing in my week? I fixed the earflaps on a cap I really like. Last winter I noticed that the wind would get in my ears unless the flaps were just right. Well, I put some supplemental material at the front of the flap and now its perfect. If there is something that better defines my aesthetic than altering a wool earflap hat, I don’t know what it is.

At about 2 AM this morning I woke up thinking that it’s pretty rich that Billy Joel is calling someone white bread in “Uptown Girl”. I don’t sleep right and my brain is strange.

This screenshot from “No Man’s Sky” sums up how I am feeling about everything right now.

Plummeting through space at incredible speed toward the black void of an unknown world.

I think the transitions in this mix are hot.

Books, Sky, D and the mix for 10-5-18

I’m a big fan of books but I’m a painfully slow reader. I think what I lack in speed I make up for in torque when it comes to retention. I also go through long jags where I don’t read books. I think that has something to do with depression in that it feels like an unwelcome chore to absorb stories sometimes. Yesterday I started reading again after a lull. Picked up a “Doc Savage” book. Written in the 30’s by Kenneth Robeson (just like the Hardy Boys were written by Franklin W. Dixon…), they are two-fisted tales of daring do. I think the nerdy equivalent is Buckaroo Banzai. I stopped actively buying books a couple years ago because I just can’t keep up and it is madness to try but have fallen off the book buying abstinence wagon so I best get at it again.

Been spending my video game time on “No Man’s Sky”. It’s a space exploration game. One of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. I don’t so much make progress as spend time dinking around. Dinking around in open world video games is one of my favorite past times, along with inventory management. No, that isn’t a joke.

Pointing my ship, the Radiant Pillar, toward the heavens as I leave my base, this is what I see. Damn this is a beautiful game.

The other video game that I might start on is “Vampire Hunter D” for the original PlayStation. Kiddo likes to go to a shop near us that carries used games and Pokemon cards. While he was picking out a couple cards (rewards for a system we have devised to encourage the eating of fruits and veggies as a lifestyle choice) I found this game in the stacks. I’m totally aware that retro gaming is a fool’s errand. It relies on nostalgia and old games don’t hold up for a myriad of reasons. This, however, is a new game to me so I’m willing to give it a swing. I’m a fan of the character Vampire Hunter D, owning the movie and having read a few of the books. I’ll update you on how it goes.

Yes I have a working original PlayStation and yes I am going to give this game a whirl.

I know exactly where this week’s mix started. This lyric in the first song: “Their dresses and their shoes are new, but their hearts are weary through and through. It’s a long way to the light of day.”. For whatever reason the album Hold Out has sort of vanished and I like to put lost things back in the world. What I seem to have accidentally built here is a playlist of existential dread centered on the current politics of the US. Still, it’s full of catchy riffs and good songs, so I hope you enjoy it on whatever level you can.

Reactivation, Vacation, Tall Grass 3 & 4 (9-28-18)

I’ve stoked the banked fires, opened the drapes, and brushed away the cobwebs. Time to let some light and air into this space again.

This was supposed to go up last week but I messed up the playlists beyond a salvageable state. Sorry about that.

There are many things we could chat about today but I want to get back into the swing of things without over thinking them. As such, I’m going to skip the politics (I believe Dr. Ford and am appalled by the way our nation and culture treats women), and instead here is one thing with several parts, but not that much reading.

The most interesting thing to happen in The Quiet Time was the family took a trip, via train, out to the west coast of the continent. Our eventual destination was Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. While we were West, there were over 500 fires burning in the province so smoke was ever present. Aside from that airborne reminder of environmental crisis, we didn’t watch the news or look at the newspaper. It was rejuvenating. Here are some pictures of the trip.

Taken from the train on the return to St Paul, MN. Glacier National Park was on fire. The park was closed to car traffic by this point.

I’m picking up where I left off in terms of music. Below you will find Part 3 and Part 4 of the Tall Grass series. I’ve noted the end time of each track so you can sample the fare without committing to the entire meal. “Avant Garde” is much more challenging to digest than “Words”. “Words” is a mix I enjoy.

Midsummer Whatnot, Tall Grass 1 & 2

Hmm?

Oh! Didn’t know you were around today. No, no, it’s fine. I was just… well, no matter. It’s good to see you. It’s been a bit, yes?

Summer is very slow in my office. So slow as to drop below the threshold of interest, as in it’s difficult for me to stay interested in much, especially creative activities. I need at least a little pressure to keep moving. I’ve felt that more than usual this summer as yesterday I finally gave up on a piece I’ve been trying to write for two months. Just can’t find the way in. So it goes.

The Tour de France has come and gone. Watching the stages is the key to my sanity in July. Yes, I stream it on my work computer. No, no one cares. Yes, everyone knows. It’s a bit like listening to hockey r baseball on the radio. You only really need to pay attention when the announcers change pitch. Then I really watch it. Otherwise its on in the background. And the last 5 km. That matters too. This year’s edition of the tour was generally not that exciting other than stage 9 over the cobblestones.

I had another essay published! I was lucky enough to make the cut over at Memoir Mixtape again. You can read my piece on “Why Worry” by Dire Straits here.

I’ve also had a mixed playlist/poem accepted at Moonchild Magazine. Not sure when that one will be published, but I’ll let you know when it is out in the world.

As promised in the previous post, I have put together a series of mixes that highlight some of the strange stuff in my collection. The first two editions of the “Tall Grass” series are below. I’ve changed the way I post the track lists so that you can see how long each song is. That way, with a little simple math, you can skip around if you like and still know what is up.

Break, Ride, and the mix for 5-25-18

This is it. The last post before the summer hiatus. Since I won’t be in the office on Fridays through the summer, I can’t post on Fridays. These things take about a week to build and trying to move that schedule up to Thursdays is a good way for me to miss my self-imposed deadline and then feel bad about the whole endeavor. Besides, it’s good to have time to recharge. That being said…

Do not despair! A series I call “Tall Grass” will randomly show up over the summer. These will be comprised of the good weird stuff that I’ve collected over the years. If you are interested in hearing the strange stuff I own, these will be for you. Everyone else, you may want to avert your ears.

If you get desperate for a mix over the summer, reach out. I’m sure I can accommodate.

The 2018 MS Ride was this last weekend. It was a chilly start (48F during check in) but the weather was mainly clear (rain predicted all the way up to the previous evening). I rode the 26 mile loop owed to a fussy knee and hip. I don’t have anything to prove to anyone anymore on the bike so rode the loop I would enjoy the most. Finished at a 13.9 mph average. Not too shabby for an old fat guy. Thank you again to everyone who so generously donated to my efforts!!
