Meg, Tonality, and the mix for 11-30-18

Sorry I don’t have much to say today. Found out this morning that a former coworker, Meg, died yesterday. She retired a couple years ago so we hadn’t crossed paths in a couple years but she was a joy to chat with, quick with a smile and a laugh, kind, interested in connecting people, and a mentor to many folks I still work with.

In music news: Beavis and Butthead went off the air this week in 1997. In commemoration, KFAI AM Drive did a set of all songs they riffed on, including a request I made. If you are the same vintage as I am, this is a good trip down memory lane.

This week’s mix is all about subtle tonality and all one artist.

Sneaking, Thanks, and the mix for 11-21-18

It’s not Friday, but I’m sneaking one in anyway because many people out there might need something to jam to that isn’t the insufferable tones of dipshittery that often affect the air at extended family gatherings. For my part, I’m very lucky. I get along with all the people who will be at Thanksgiving.

In the spirit of the holiday, here are some things, in no particular order, in which I am thankful for:
Health insurance / pockets / my Stanley coffee thermos / Swiss army knives / refrigeration / clean water / housing / No Man’s Sky / family / friends / donuts / good flashlights that don’t require a giant 6V dry cell battery / space heaters / the Futurama episode “Three Hundred Big Boys” / bicycles / friction / music / kindness / green spaces / The Minneapolis Institute of Arts / “Morning Drive” on KFAI FM / you reading this blog.

If you are going to brave that uniquely American horror that is Black Friday, please be kind to others, especially the folks who aren’t getting the day off that you are.

I worked and reworked this mix and every time I added something beyond these tracks, it got worse, so while it clocks in at a mere 40 minutes, it’s a tight run. The transition at 21:30 is perfect if I do say so myself.

Stumped, Sank, and the mix for 11-16-18

One of the benefits of working on a college campus is the library and the friendships I have built with various librarians. I check out music but today I felt bad about it. This was the 11th album I have gone to check out and the second time in six months that I asked for a thing that is marked as being in the collection but is absent. I feel like a bad troublemaker.

There was no blog last week because I was up on the north short visiting Split Rock lighthouse. Each year they light the beacon to commemorate the 1975 sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It is a good ceremony if you have the chance to go.

This is one of the busiest weeks of the term for me, so not much else to say and out of time to say it. Here are some picture of the trip north.

Seven, Two Acceptances, and the mix for 11-2-18

WordPress tells me that I first registered with the site seven years ago. That seems like too many years. I know, from rooting around in some file folders on the mixing computer, that I’ve posted roughly 150 mixes. So maybe that is right. Who am I to argue with time and the perception thereof?

Good news, everyone! I’ve had a poem published at Moonchild Magazine that mixes music and poetry. And if that wasn’t fun enough, it was announced just today that I’ll be the featured visual artist for issue #2 of Kissing Dynamite! 13 of my photos will be in the issue. I am downright chuffed at these announcements!

Hooray for acceptances!

Before we reconvene next week there will be an election. Go vote. More than that, vote Democrat across the ticket. They don’t have to be perfect candidates, that isn’t a reasonable ask. Talk to your relatives and friends about their plans to get to the polls. Make your own plans to get to the polls if you haven’t voted early. Talk to your elderly neighbors that might need help getting to the polls and give them a ride if they are Democrats. Don’t help racists vote. Be responsible citizens and vote for the values that bring us together such as health care for people, voting rights, and human rights, not divide us in hate.

Off-track,’defines as…’ and the mix for 10-26-18

It’s no secret that my job is very uneven it the daily workflow. Often times I am left looking for something to do. It is the nature of working in the field I do. It is also an outflow of working with people who have actually learned the things I have trained them to do. I work with a bright team and they make it easy on me. The problem is that if I am left to my own devices for too long I go off the rails. This week I spent a notable amount of time doing what I call “Recontextualization Theater” with public domain material from the Digital Collections at the New York Public Library. See below for just a few of my favorite examples.

This week Merriam Webster put up a fun little feature called Time Traveler which allows one to see what words were added to the dictionary in a given year.
The reason I bring it up is that a couple words from the year I came around reinforced a point that I have made off-handedly for a few years now. When I talk about being diabetic I say “It’s a whole different ball game now than when I was a kid. Not even really comparable”. The words “Glycosylated hemoglobin” and “Juvenile-onset diabetes” were both added the year I was born. The year I was diagnosed “type 1 diabetes” was added. Other words that remind me of how much things have changed since being a kid (all added in my birth year): CAT scan, Date rape, Cognitive behavioral therapy. Some happy words added that year? Subwoofer and Twist tie.

This week’s mix contains a bonus track strictly for those that listen on Saturday (tomorrow, Oct 27th).
