Christmas as a Genre, Office Vinyl, and the mix for 12-8-17

Christmas music is a strange genre. It is also one that I have found myself overly invested in.

Years ago I found a couple record albums in the office storage closet. They were in awful shape, kitschy, and random, but I displayed them with the other decorations. Many (if not all) of my office mates were delighted by these trinkets and started talking about the albums they grew up with. Given that I had the extra equipment around, I brought in a little stereo set up and encouraged people to bring their vinyl in. It turned out to be one of the best (accidental) team building exercises we ever had.

The every-growing stack of Christmas vinyl in my office.

As the years have gone on, I’ve slowly acquired more and more Christmas records. They are plentiful and usually very cheap. When I worked in consumer electronics, it was always a bit of a head scratcher looking through the seasonal cds when they came in. All Christmas music albums will sell. No idea why, but they do. Consequently, there are a lot of terrible Christmas songs out there and middling albums of lack luster performances of holiday songs you already know.

Onkyo CP1010A turntable, Pyle PTAU23 amp (with a Pyle PP444 pre amp on top) make and a pair of unpictured Yamaha NSX70 speakers make up the office hi-fi. The bottom black box on the left is an Onkyo stereo tuner, but it doesn’t pick up much beyond static given where I am in the building.

As a public service, here is a short list of really strange yet oddly agreeable Christmas songs (the weird good stuff):
R2D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas – Meco
Merry Christmas, Santa Claus (You’re A Lovely Guy) – Max Headroom
Mistress for Christmas – AC/DC

Also, here is a list of actually good modern Christmas songs:
Snowfall* – Enoch Light
We Three Kings of Orient Are – The Beach Boys
Merry Christmas Baby – Chuck Berry

*I call this a Christmas song because the only place I have ever encountered it is on seasonal compilations.

This mix has no Christmas songs.

Ol’ Rickety, Paint, and the mix for 12-1-17

Schedules and tech issues. That is what has kept this space blank. The two tech issues in short 1) My laptop is getting old and rickety. It takes a long time to start and that pisses me off and eats up the limited time I have to build podcasts. Time to start saving for a new one. 2) I’ve made a copy of my entire music library and am now accessing/building playlists in a different way. Works well but took a couple weeks to pull off/smooth out. Enough of how the sausage is made…

I’ve been making a significant effort to read more books and not just look at single sentences on the internet, but engaging the written word in the evening and over my lunch time. This week I read the sci-fi short story “Can of Paint” from 1944, by A. E. von Vogt. While his work is imminently engaging and infinitely inventive, it has some holes. A line in this story struck me as so absurd that I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind. Summary: The main character, Kilgour*, is the first man** to land on Venus and finds himself imperiled as he is accidentally coated in a mysterious substance that threatens to encase him completely. In surveying his situation, Kilgour boldly decides he will be ok because “People who used paint wouldn’t murder him out of hand”. If I have learned anything about people it is that paint use doesn’t indicate one way or the other how evil and violent a person is or their capacity for murder of an unwanted intruder.

Another thing that struck me as ludicrous about this story is a notion I have seen in other space opera stories: That pioneering astronauts could be morons, could be the lowest ranked students or bumbling fools, and still be ok. A prime example of this in play is 1987’s Wings of Honneamise. I think this is a move to humanize the characters, but it is an awful device.

*This immediately reminded me of Kurt Vonnegut’s character Kilgore Trout. I haven’t looked into it (because I like some mystery in the world) but I have a gut feeling these two fictional people are related.

**In reading more than a few von Vogt books, it is always a man doing a thing. His ability to write a women character is somewhere between “sexy cardboard cutout” and “I’m not including women in this universe at all”. So heads up there.

Rain (2), Thing, and the mix for 11-10-17

Not much is coming to mind to share today so I’ll engage that and keep it short.

I’m again working through Robert Lee Brewer’s November Chapbook Challenge. I’m writing only for myself this year in an effort to get back into a mindset of reading and writing more actively. That being said, I think this cinquain from the prompt “write a thing poem” for day 8 is worth sharing.

The Thing!
Is his dork orange
Rock like the rest of him‽
It’s a super hero secret
Brodie.

This week’s mix is Part 2 on the topic “Rain”, supplied by Maria. Part 1 is here.

Depression, Vandalism, and the mix for 11-3-17

Hasn’t been a great week, dear reader. In short, I’m having a depressive episode and didn’t realize it until this week. That is how depression works. So, I’ve identified what is happening and why I am thinking like I am and am working as I can to level out.

This week was Halloween. Kiddo went as Robin Hood. I went as Paul Bunyan. My costume wasn’t a stretch from my normal garb in any meaningful way. Kiddo went with a friend this year and had a blast. Given the temp (30F) we had fewer kids than usual. Next year, we have decided as a household, to hand out full sized candy bars.

The most disappointing news of the week is that a poster at my work desk was vandalized (see below) sometime on Thursday (a day I was away from the desk for long stretches during the workday).

IMG_1095

If you need a legalistic definition of hate speech from a poster you vandalized at someone’s desk, that just means you want to be an asshole but not get busted for it.

While I make it a policy not to argue with what amounts to bathroom stall graffiti, I will note two things here. First, the poster doesn’t mention hate speech. So thanks for letting me know exactly what your objective is, d-bag (and I am certain this was written by a 19 year old white privileged dudebro who is made he can’t tell racists jokes to his classmates now). Second, this makes me think immediately of Catcher in the Rye. There’s always someone out there willing to ruin something by writing “fuck” all over it. The poster will be replaced on Monday with a laminated version.

This week’s theme comes courtesy of Todd Weekly who was kind enough to respond to my request for topics on twitter.
