Poetry, Lows, and the mix for 4-7-17

My suspicion is that if you read this blog you already know its National Poetry Month. Below is a poem that I wrote some time ago (perhaps as long as three years). I’ve shopped it around but it hasn’t found a home so I’m going to share it here because I want to put it out into the world.

Directions to the House

Half the distance already gone
Unnoticed like autumn to the pines

Soften a moment by the plum trees
Our border-guarded neutrality

Turn towards the lake or the stream
So long as a choice is made

If the post box lays barren and forlorn
No blame lies with the postman

No more turning widdershins
The gravel lane runs true

There, half lit, the house open,
Fitful as one who naps too late

Digress into the warm night kitchen
To break our fast of each other.

In other news, I have had a new pattern show up in my blood sugars that I really don’t like. For the last few days I’ve had a low reading at about 8:30 am. Traditionally this has been the time for a shallow high (not a sharp peak but a slow build and decline). 8:30 am is a terrible time for a low blood sugar because the mind leaves you and starting your work day not being able to concentrate and accurately handle details is a very bad trip. I’ll have to figure out why this is happening and get it fixed.

Next Friday the office is closed for Easter. As such, no podcast.

Cosplay, Musical Blizzard, and the mix for 10-31-14

It’s new podcast day! By happenstance today is also Halloween. I’ve got mixed feelings about Halloween.

On the plus side today is my parent’s 44th wedding anniversary. Being that they grew up farming the going about to neighbor’s houses for treats wasn’t much of a thing. First and foremost today has always been their anniversary.

Also in the plus category is widespread cosplay. I think costumes are cool and that maybe we would all be a little happier if we pretended to be fantastic beings more often. I’ve always tended towards costumes that need qualification and explanation but when someone gets them, man is that a hoot. I also love seeing what kids come up with. One boy in 4th grade at my son’s school wore a wide stripe black and white pinstriped suit and a Darth Vader mask. “I’m Darth Businessman!” he said. There was also a karate werewolf in the group.

On the negative side, having been diabetic since the age of 7 or 8, it always felt like a day built to highlight my exclusion. That was really hard for the first couple of years. I was grateful the year our cat had fleas and the house was fumigated on Halloween. The family went out for Chinese food that night to celebrate the aforementioned anniversary and to not inhale the fumes. I basically got to skip Halloween and since I was about the age where trick-or-treating was losing its luster that was fine by me.

My favorite Halloween costume (that I wore) was in college. I was invited to a “Drag Party”. I wore full leather gear and a motorcycle helmet: A Drag Racer. It was a huge hit.

I’d be failing in my Minnesotan Duties if I didn’t bring up the Halloween Blizzard of 1991 in this post. I mention it as a transition point to the music.

The weekend before the Halloween Blizzard I was out camping with my scout troop at Frontenac State Park. It was beautiful during the day and miserably cold at night. A friend of mine had just purchased the album “On Every Street” by Dire Straits. We listened to the cassette all the way down and all the way back. I bought the cd sometime the next week. When the blizzard dumped three feet of snow on us, I sat in the living room watching it pile up and listening to that album. Today and that album are forever linked.

October Listening
Van Morrison’s “Moondance” gets play this time of year too for the lyric “Under October skies…”

Black Box Lunch, A1C, and the mix for 10-3-14

My current job has returned me to a building I worked in for the bulk of my career here so far. There are two small areas of chairs in the foyer of the building set in a square with a low square table in the middle. I tend to eat my lunch in this space. I had forgotten that those two spaces often and accidentally act as intimate black box theaters. On Tuesday I was treated to two lunch time shows: “The Loudest Salad Eater in the World” followed by a social commentary piece where an elderly man reads a paper and says “Dumb ass” at random intervals, volumes, and intonations. On days where there are no performances, I just read a book or look out the window. I enjoy this space.

This week also saw my twice annual visit with my endocrinologist. At that meeting we discussed one of my blood work results called glycosylated hemoglobin, or A1C for short. “The A1C test result reflects your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months. Specifically, the A1C test measures what percentage of your hemoglobin – a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen – is coated with sugar (glycated). The higher your A1C level, the poorer your blood sugar control and the higher your risk of diabetes complications.” (Thanks mayoclinic.org!).
Traditionally the A1C has been the indisputable proof of effort. No matter what conversations I had with my doctor, no matter what written records I brought in, the A1C had the final word. Over the years the time, amount of blood, and accuracy of the A1C (or what I was told about it) has wobbled. Originally it was a vial of blood and three weeks for 6 months of accuracy. Now it is a capillary tube, three minutes, and two months of accuracy.

That’s a One Touch Ultra and the penlet that draws blood from your finger in that picture. I’ve had mine for about ten years. It’s the companion to my Dexcom G4.

Not this time. Because of the Dexcom 4G CGM (see previous posts about the topic of the continuous glucose monitor) I wear, I learned some important things. First, the data on the cgm is downloadable and printable. I don’t need to write it down anymore. The data points are vastly more numerous. Instead of 4 or 5 readings a day, I’ve got weeks of readings at 5 minute intervals. I had gone in a week previous to have my blood drawn for all the standard tests (proteins, lipids, A1C, etc). The result was a very disappointing A1C of 8. My goal was an A1C of 7, or at most by my calculations, a 7.3. What was so disheartening about this 8 was my previous (by 6 months) A1C had been a 7.6. Surely with the vast additional monitoring horsepower of the Dexcom I would be closer to a healthy number, right?
Here is where the learning comes in. So both my cgm and my standard blood glucose meter (where you harvest the blood of your fingertips for science) said my average blood sugar was between 145-150mg/dl. My doctor noticed this as well and waived off the A1C as less accurate than the data we had. We used a couple other tools/graphs to calculate my A1C at 6.8 to 7.1. Those are primo numbers! Hooray for the data driven approach.

Play list, 4-25-13

Regular visitors (do I have any of those yet?) to the blogotron will notice that the layout is vastly different than last week. That is in no small part an accident. I just rolled with it. If you have feelings about it one way or the other, let me know.

This week’s mix has a lot of talking. Once per term KUST has Social Justice and Awareness Week (SJAW for short). This is the mechanism by which the club fulfills its service hour requirement. Since I do a show and am not just a distance advisor, I am also subject to the rules. If you are really interested in skipping the talking, it is in the dead middle of the mix over the songs “Radioharp” and “Underwater Promenade”. My topic this term was Diabetes Awareness and the Associated Costs for Treatment.
For more information about diabetes and its associated costs I would recommend this link to the American Diabetes Association’s webpage: http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/diabetes-statistics/?loc=DropDownDB-stats

There is a mild sonic theme to this show. Not all the songs conform to it, but most do. Any guesses as to what that might be?
