Drag, Sign, and the mix for 3-31-17

Shall we board the Wonkatania for another trip down through the dark tunnel where not a speck of light is showing?

I had written a paragraph here about the process of sorting old photos that I am currently engaged in and how much of a drag I find it but that was a drag to read as well so I deleted it. Instead, a word of advice: Work out an active and sustainable way to manage your digital pictures or archiving just becomes the new forgetting.

I built a playlist yesterday that so well captured my current existential state that it made me too sad to listen to it. Never had that happen before.

Training for the MS Ride in May has started in earnest. Getting back into condition hasn’t been as bad as I expected but my knees are certainly showing their age this year. Last night, as I was training, I caught sight of myself reflected in the dark window. A side view of me in lyrca is not flattering and now I feel bad for anyone who has to ride next to me.

Prince’s album “Sign O’ The Times” is now 30 years old. I could write a whole post on my relationship to that album (let me know if you want to read that) but instead, here are, in no particular order, my current ten favorite Prince songs:
-It
-Hot Thing
-Pink Cashmere
-Anotherloverholenyohead
-1000 X’s & O’s
-Electric Chair
-Cloreen Bacon Skin
-Kiss
-Right Back Here In My Arms
-The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Meh, chill, and the mix for 12-2-16

I’m not feeling it today, folks.

There has been a process update at work (and to save you the boring details!) which is good overall but now a lot of work happens at once that used to happen over a week or two. I would normally take some cheer from playing Christmas records (yup, a stack of real vinyl) in the office but the belt gave up on the turntable so none of that until the new belt arrives. Add the dark, wet weather but lack of seasonal snow and I’m just “meh” about things.

So it goes.

The Long Game (1 and 2) and the mix for 5-20-16

Yesterday I was home with kiddo. He had a good old case of the mystery vomits. There was a lot of laundry and a lot of hand washing. Anybody who presents parenting as mainly sunshine, daisies, and butter mellow is full of crap. No, it isn’t all horror either. Like all things worth doing it is a long game full of nuance and steady effort. Yesterday just took more effort.

Because of kiddo being sick I had to surrender tickets to the Comedy Bang Bang show at the Pantages Theater and the accompanying date night those tickets were the center piece of. That was the hard part of the day, really. Going out events are rare so one getting cancelled has more impact. There is nothing to do about it but it was a bummer.

Summer has returned in two ways. First, today was the final day of Final Exams here on campus. It’s all over but the shouting. Second, lawn mowing season is back. I’ve been mowing lawns since I was about nine years old. I am looking forward passing that proud tradition down to my son as it was passed to me from my father, unceremoniously and with a certain glee at “no backsies” being called. Trouble is, I grew up with a pool table flat yard. The current yard has a wicked short run hill on the east side of the house. It’s the kind of slope that can flip a mower if done wrong. I have to ask myself how badly I don’t want to mow the lawn and if my desire to be free of this, my least favorite outdoor activity, means I am willing to risk the safety of others. It’s a tough call and the jury is still out.

In college I once did a radio show in which I played the longest songs I could get away with. I had a test the next day and I needed all the time I could get to study. It sort of worked. This mix, while not prompted by the pressing nature of other obligations necessarily, follows that mold. The shortest cut is ten and a half minutes. The longest cut is just under twenty minutes. So, sit back, strap in, and fuzz out.

Play list, 2-20-14

Last night the biggest storm of the winter rolled through the Twin Cities. It involved a warm front with a nice amount of melt, followed by about an hour of rain, and then ten inches of wet snow. Temperatures dropped from 30F to 8F and the winds picked up to around 30 miles per hour. It was ugly. This morning revealed a frosted landscape that had tried very hard and only just failed in its attempt to ice murder* us. It was beautiful in its way but also impassable to those with good sense. So today was a family snow day. School was cancelled and while work wasn’t, it kind of was. I’m writing this in the late afternoon sunshine on a laptop at home. There has been much shoveling, playing in the snow, and even the making of a snow cave.

*The phrase ‘ice murder’ was coined by John Moe on Wits. He is funny and deserves full credit for the accurate summation.

You may or may not have noticed that I have removed certain verbiage from the description of the mix and how it comes about. I have completely abandoned that realm and while part of me is sad for the inauspicious end, the greater part of me is glad to dust my hands off and not have to be the singular person who gives a shit about it. Perhaps the ability to better handle endings is a positive trait of getting older.

A loyal listener pointed out there has been a notable time gap between mixes lately. Some of this is perfectly normal. I generally write the blog and post it during work hours but more importantly keep one ear on the iPod so I can build a playlist during the long hours of data entry. As the start of another term steam rolled me I just didn’t have time (or couldn’t see any time to) to accomplish this writing/posting/building. I’ve also come to realize as of last Sunday that I have been in the middle of a trough of depression. Five hours of lying on the couch feeling hollow and full of self-loathing brought that into focus. That hollowness precludes any creative endeavors. It’s been long enough on the upside that I didn’t see what was happening until it was very dark. I’ve been back on the treadmill, eating more fruits and vegetables, and making the effort to just talk about it. I’m still feeling the shadows around the edges, but coming towards the surface.

This mix is ambient in nature. Take in to account the previous paragraph. So, if you are looking for a soundtrack for a hypnogogic state, here it is.
