Winter, “Other”, and the mix for 1-18-19

This winter has been unusual in Minnesota. It is a direct consequence of climate change (if you don’t agree with the first part of this sentence, this isn’t the webpage for you). I miss winter. Until this year I hadn’t fully realized how much winter is part of my identity and how much I enjoy being outside during the season. I think all of the self portraits that I’ve really liked have been taken in the winter.

I’ve started an “Other Works” page. Which is accessible via a little grey clickable box at the top right of the home page. If you are interested in other things I’ve don e(photography, poetry, etc) that is the place to look. New publications will be listed there if/when they happen. It’s a work in progress.

You get a twofer this week!
The first mix below is in danger of being buried by time. It was a splinter of the previous post that evolved into its own cul du sac of a mix. Didn’t get posted last week because I was out of the office.

The second mix happened very quickly. I had the beat in my veins and just sat down and started pulling tracks that had the groove.

Quick, Kelly, and the mix for 1-4-19

I had several things to talk about, but as is astoundingly common in my days, no one wanted to talk to me until the last 45 minutes of my day. That is when I would usually write the blog. But this week my work bestie Kelly needed to chat. IRL conversation comes first so now it is past time to go home but I’m not leaving you high and dry. I promised to be back on the last blog and I am still good to my word.

It’s a short mix this week at roughly 45 minutes. So it goes.

Disapproval, Organ, and the mix for 12-21-18

I’ve had a head cold this week that has made me very foggy. I disapprove of this.

Looks like we are going to have a brown Christmas in much of Minnesota. I also disapprove of that.

Today is the Solstice and it has been heavily overcast. Gloom at its highest. Totally disapprove.

What I do approve of is good conversation. This week’s mix is based largely on songs and artists that came up in conversations I had with folks.

So you know, there will be a brief hiatus until the first Friday in January. That is when I am back in the office.

I bought this at a junk shop this week. It doubles the number of Christmas organ records on red vinyl I have. Local connection: Its on Soma Records, which was based in Minneapolis.

Meg, Tonality, and the mix for 11-30-18

Sorry I don’t have much to say today. Found out this morning that a former coworker, Meg, died yesterday. She retired a couple years ago so we hadn’t crossed paths in a couple years but she was a joy to chat with, quick with a smile and a laugh, kind, interested in connecting people, and a mentor to many folks I still work with.

In music news: Beavis and Butthead went off the air this week in 1997. In commemoration, KFAI AM Drive did a set of all songs they riffed on, including a request I made. If you are the same vintage as I am, this is a good trip down memory lane.

This week’s mix is all about subtle tonality and all one artist.

Sneaking, Thanks, and the mix for 11-21-18

It’s not Friday, but I’m sneaking one in anyway because many people out there might need something to jam to that isn’t the insufferable tones of dipshittery that often affect the air at extended family gatherings. For my part, I’m very lucky. I get along with all the people who will be at Thanksgiving.

In the spirit of the holiday, here are some things, in no particular order, in which I am thankful for:
Health insurance / pockets / my Stanley coffee thermos / Swiss army knives / refrigeration / clean water / housing / No Man’s Sky / family / friends / donuts / good flashlights that don’t require a giant 6V dry cell battery / space heaters / the Futurama episode “Three Hundred Big Boys” / bicycles / friction / music / kindness / green spaces / The Minneapolis Institute of Arts / “Morning Drive” on KFAI FM / you reading this blog.

If you are going to brave that uniquely American horror that is Black Friday, please be kind to others, especially the folks who aren’t getting the day off that you are.

I worked and reworked this mix and every time I added something beyond these tracks, it got worse, so while it clocks in at a mere 40 minutes, it’s a tight run. The transition at 21:30 is perfect if I do say so myself.
