Yesterday two historical things happened.
About 1pm Central Time cyclist Jens Voigt retired from the sport after beating the World Hour Record with a distance of 51.110 km on a velodrome in Switzerland. The previous record was roughly 49.7 km set in 2005. There is a long and winding history to this record but the short of it is the UCI (the world governing body of cycling) reset the rules this year to say riders can use current track legal equipment. Even with that update this is no small feat. The 43 year old rider (his birthday was on Wednesday) is a personal favorite of mine for his longevity (turned pro in 1997, rode 17 Tours De France), his being personable with a good sense of humor, and his having raced clean in the darkest era of the sport. It’s an amazing capstone to a fantastic career and he’ll be missed.
All though the day yesterday the citizens of Scotland voted on a referendum whose ballot wording was a masterpiece of clear statement: Should Scotland be an independent country? The choices only “Yes” or “No”. The results posted this morning were that 55% said “No” so the United Kingdom stays united. I find this vote and its potential long term social and political ramifications to be fascinating. It was a peaceful process and that by itself deserves applause as does the vast turnout for the vote (well above 80% participation).
In much less historical news I’ve been wading through the existential nature of old pants: I still fit in a pair of pants that I first wore in 1992. These are my old scouting dress pants. Now I wear them to work in the shop. The fact that I have owned a single pair of pants that long and that they fit sets me to thinking about the concept of identity. Once a river is named, it keeps that name even though each moment the contents of that river change as the water flows away. It keeps that name even though the boundaries and even the course of the river are altered over time as banks are eroded. Below is a representation of me, working on mechanical things, thinking about existential matters, in old pants…
