The Onion On My Internet Belt

The week has been unsettled. Kiddo had his first full week of kindergarten. He seems to like it but there is clearly a lot coming at him. He’s been more fussy and closer to the surface than usual which is totally fair. As parents there is also a lot coming at us. There is no way I brought home so many papers with various pieces of school information at that age. It was the first full week of the term for me at my new job as well. The foot traffic and phone calls are light but the email load is roughly x2 or x3 from the old position. Many good learning experiences and a lot of treading water. I’ve also slept on a cot in the living room a couple of nights due to illness. It’s a category of rest at least.

Rode the St. Paul Classic last Sunday. I think I’ve ridden it 8 times now but I’m not so sure. Rode with my friends Dan and Kate. We started by agreement later than usual and this led to dealing with an appalling number of cyclists who don’t either understand or don’t abide by the “Ride Right” rule. My throat actually got sore from yelling “On your left” at errant participants. Also, they need to get off my lawn.

We’ve been checking out a lot of books from the library. Many are on Star Wars and include all six movies in their stories. I don’t think the Star Wars story arc being focused on the rise, corruption, and eventual redemption of Anakin Skywalker is as strong a story as when the arc was the story of a lost boy who grows up and does right in the face of cruelty. I wonder about this shift from “boy comes of age and does right” to “father is rescued by the son he abandoned” as a function of age in that the original creators/audience were sons in a changing cultural milieu and now they are fathers feeling adrift in a system they endorsed hoping to be absolved by the very sons they failed. I’m still formulating my ideas on how women are portrayed in this story with concerns especially towards the mother/wife roles.
