The Onion On My Internet Belt

Last night the biggest storm of the winter rolled through the Twin Cities. It involved a warm front with a nice amount of melt, followed by about an hour of rain, and then ten inches of wet snow. Temperatures dropped from 30F to 8F and the winds picked up to around 30 miles per hour. It was ugly. This morning revealed a frosted landscape that had tried very hard and only just failed in its attempt to ice murder* us. It was beautiful in its way but also impassable to those with good sense. So today was a family snow day. School was cancelled and while work wasn’t, it kind of was. I’m writing this in the late afternoon sunshine on a laptop at home. There has been much shoveling, playing in the snow, and even the making of a snow cave.

*The phrase ‘ice murder’ was coined by John Moe on Wits. He is funny and deserves full credit for the accurate summation.

You may or may not have noticed that I have removed certain verbiage from the description of the mix and how it comes about. I have completely abandoned that realm and while part of me is sad for the inauspicious end, the greater part of me is glad to dust my hands off and not have to be the singular person who gives a shit about it. Perhaps the ability to better handle endings is a positive trait of getting older.

A loyal listener pointed out there has been a notable time gap between mixes lately. Some of this is perfectly normal. I generally write the blog and post it during work hours but more importantly keep one ear on the iPod so I can build a playlist during the long hours of data entry. As the start of another term steam rolled me I just didn’t have time (or couldn’t see any time to) to accomplish this writing/posting/building. I’ve also come to realize as of last Sunday that I have been in the middle of a trough of depression. Five hours of lying on the couch feeling hollow and full of self-loathing brought that into focus. That hollowness precludes any creative endeavors. It’s been long enough on the upside that I didn’t see what was happening until it was very dark. I’ve been back on the treadmill, eating more fruits and vegetables, and making the effort to just talk about it. I’m still feeling the shadows around the edges, but coming towards the surface.

This mix is ambient in nature. Take in to account the previous paragraph. So, if you are looking for a soundtrack for a hypnogogic state, here it is.

  1. Glad you are coming towards the surface.

  2. Thanks. The night before last most of my dreams were of water and things partly submerged. Not sure if it is the season of melting or mental state. A couple people at work have commented that I seem more “upbeat and engaged” in the last couple of days. That’s probably a good thing.

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. I appreciate it.

  3. I know I feel more upbeat and engaged as we move into spring.
